According to its historical origin, Merengue was the burgeoning beat of The Dominican Republic born in the 18th century. It is ideally suited to small and crowded dance areas with its "bottle-like movements". In Merengue couples dance closely together in one flowing movement which consisted of paseo (walk), and jaleo (body).
This Salsa-cousin dance music which alternates between slow and fast tempo is often played by the band or deejays in the clubs all around the world in between the dance repertoire. In the early days when South American dances first appeared in KL, Merengue was made a compulsory lesson by instructors in a learning combination together with Salsa and Cumbia. It is a dance that is easy to learn and essentially fun to dance.
