The music that is most closely identified with Colombia is Cumbia-- a Latin mixture of solidly grounded yet very hot rhythm with an airily syncopated melody. Its distinctive shuffling steps reputedly survived from the days when the slaves in their barracks would attempt to dance while restrained by their fetters and leg-irons. Cumbia met Mambo when it left the countryside in mid 40's to become a dance of the urban middle and upper classes, where its interpretation changed radically. In the 70's, a new influence hit Cumbia in the form of Salsa. About 30 years later it hit KL's Latin clubs alongside with Salsa and Merengue. An explosion of its spread was experienced through the South American bands, dance instructors, Latinos and gringos alike.
