1. I have never danced before and feel I have 2 left feet. How will I go? Isn't Salsa terribly difficult?
Don’t worry this is a very common way for most people to feel until they get to their first class. In the Beginners level we assume people know absolutely nothing about Latin Dance and show the basics very clearly. Becoming fluent in Salsa does take a little more time, it's true, but we know that part of the fun is in getting there. For most people it's about learning a new skill and having fun.
  2. Do I need a partner?
Absolutely not. We regularly rotate people throughout the class and always have a few extra helpers around to try to balance out numbers as much as possible.
  3. I am coming with a partner. Can we dance together?
Yes. Whether you stay together or swap is entirely up to you. If you feel more comfortable doing your Salsa together that is fine - though if you do change occasionally you will probably find your dancing will come along a bit quicker.
  4. What do I wear to Salsa?
Most people come in casual wear. Some dress up. Regardless, it's a dance class, so you should be comfortable! Look presentable and nice We have air-conditioning for the hot nights for the cold nights but be prepared you will get hot!
  5. What shoes should I wear? I need special Salsa shoes, right?
Avoid sports shoes or shoes that grip as they make it harder to put in your salsa moves and to move around on the floor. Also avoid backless sandals or jandals as they tend to slip off as you dance. Other than that anything goes in your beginners course - as you progress however you may like to look for dance shoes but it is not essential and we can help you with that at the time.
  6. Do I need to book or just turn up?
We prefer to pre-register so we know how many people will be at the night & can balance numbers as much as possible.
  7. How can we pay?
Either cheque (with ID), cash or payment by direct debit. (Dance Spirit Maybank Account : 514897001307)
  8. When can I start learning Salsa!
Check out our Schedules & Prices schedule and get yourself booked in!
  9. Anything else I need to know about classes or how to prepare, what to bring?
Just bring yourself, your friends, and the desire to learn and have fun. You'll have a great time! Always prepare for dance classes by practicing good hygiene! What that means is, please shower before coming to class - and wear deodorant and antiperspirant. Ladies - perfume, men - a touch of cologne. These little thoughtful touches go a long way. Nobody forget - bring your breath mints.
  10. What are three big tips for a Beginner dancer trying to learn the fastest way possible?
First, count out loud! Just like in class - take every opportunity to count and grasp the rhythm. Second, perhaps find a partner to practice with them (you should still rotate partners in class, but outside of class, you can practice with someone). Third - did I mention practice? The fastest way to learn is by taking private lessons, and outings to the actual dance clubs!
  11. Do I really need private lessons?
I recommend everyone start with at least one group session! Yes, you heard that right, do not take a private to start dancing. Take a group class first, and start learning some of the basics and the fundamentals. That way, you'll get far more out of your private lessons. Don't substitute privates for group classes! They work best together rather than individually. You'll want to take your first private within your first 2 months of dancing (before bad habits have a chance to develop).
